Your NDIS Plan Explained — Step by Step
At its core, the NDIS provides individual funding to Australians with disability. As the National Disability Insurance Agency explains, the scheme gives you choice and control over the supports you receive. But how does it actually work day to day? Here's the journey, broken down into simple steps.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Before anything else, you need to confirm you meet the NDIS eligibility rules. You must be under 65, live in Australia, and have a permanent disability that significantly affects your daily life. Read our full eligibility guide for more detail.
Step 2: Make an Access Request
Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 or visit their website to start your application. You'll need to fill out an Access Request Form and provide evidence from your doctors and specialists about your disability and how it affects you.
Step 3: Your Planning Meeting
Once approved, you'll sit down with an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator. This is your chance to talk about your life — your goals, your daily routine, the things you want to achieve, and the support you need to get there. Be honest and specific. The more they understand, the better your plan will be.
Step 4: Receive Your NDIS Plan
After your planning meeting, the NDIS will create your personalised plan. This document shows how much funding you receive and what categories it falls under. Your plan is usually reviewed every 12 to 24 months.
Understanding Your NDIS Budgets
Your NDIS funding is split into three main budget categories. Understanding these helps you make the most of your plan.
| Budget | What it covers | Flexibility | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Supports | Everyday activities and current needs | Most flexible — move funds between categories | Personal care, household tasks, community access, transport, STA |
| Capacity Building | Building skills and independence for the future | Fixed per category — cannot be moved | Therapy, employment support, support coordination, plan management |
| Capital Supports | Higher-cost investments and equipment | Restricted — specific quoted items only | Wheelchairs, home modifications, vehicle modifications, SDA |
Step 5: Put Your Plan into Action
Once you have your plan, it's up to you how you use it. You choose which providers to work with and how your supports are delivered. If you need a trusted registered NDIS provider in Melbourne or Monash, Beside You Care is here to help. We deliver warm, consistent support that puts you in control.
